Job Description:
CapeNature is seeking a qualified individual for the maintenance of facilities and infrastructure at Gamkaberg Nature Reserve. The role involves routine and emergency repairs, maintenance scheduling, visitor feedback management, and supervisory tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain reserve tourism infrastructure and equipment.
  • Conduct routine and emergency repairs as per standards.
  • Report deficiencies and maintain maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor visitor feedback and conduct inspections.
  • Manage stores, tools, and supplies.
  • Assist with terrain, footpath, and road maintenance.
  • Support Integrated Catchment tasks.
  • Supervise EPWP contract staff and manage vehicle fleet.
  • Ensure OHS compliance and source quotations.
  • Assist with tourism duties and provide customer service.
  • Conduct standby duties and visitor briefings as required.

Requirements:

  • Grade 12 qualification.
  • Minimum of two years job-related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Physical ability for maintenance duties.
  • Interest in working in the natural environment.
  • No criminal record.
  • Willingness to work weekend shifts and irregular hours.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Knowledge and experience in infrastructure repair and maintenance.

Recommendations:

  • Driver’s license with 4X4 driving experience.
  • Artisan training or relevant certificates.
  • Experience in tool and power-tool maintenance.
  • Storage management experience.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.

Field Ranger (Level 4)

Job Description:
CapeNature is seeking a dynamic individual to undertake reserve operations and implement natural resource management at the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. The role involves ecological data collection, infrastructure maintenance, environmental education, law enforcement, and supervisory tasks.

Responsibilities:

Supervisory and Administrative Duties:

  • Support effective management of the Protected Area.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Annual Plan of Operations.
  • Complete administrative tasks and compile reports.
  • Attend and contribute to management meetings.
  • Assist with LED initiatives and tourism activities.
  • Act as Senior Field Ranger or Nature Conservator when necessary.

Implement Eco-Matrix and Integrated Catchment Management:

  • Collect and manage ecological data according to standardized processes.
  • Conduct infrastructure surveys and record-keeping.
  • Assist with special projects such as alien vegetation management and firefighting.
  • Conduct ecological monitoring and assist with research projects.
  • Assist with environmental education and invasive alien plant control.

Legal Compliance and Occupational Health and Safety:

  • Carry out law enforcement duties including patrol, observation, and issuing warnings/fines.
  • Support conservation law enforcement off reserves.
  • Assist with search and rescue operations and risk assessments.
  • Act as an Environmental Control Officer.

Infrastructure and Equipment:

  • Undertake maintenance and servicing of facilities.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment.
  • Transport staff, contractors, and equipment.

Client Care:

  • Provide visitors with information and interpretation.
  • Assist with tourism activities and gate guard duties.
  • Apply basic First Aid when necessary.

Minimum Requirements:

  • National Certificate in Conservation Resource Guardianship or equivalent (NQF level 2).
  • Minimum of two years job-related experience.
  • Valid code B driver’s license with 4×4 driving skills.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, QGIS).
  • Knowledge and experience in ecological monitoring, law enforcement, and firefighting.
  • Crew Boss level or higher qualification.
  • No criminal record.
  • Project management skills.
  • Valid Peace Officer certificate and Environmental Inspector Class 4 appointment.

Competencies:

  • Willingness to work weekends and irregular hours.
  • Physical ability to perform field ranger duties.
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good project planning and organizing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS-Office and use of QGIS software.

Recommendations:

  • Possession of a valid Peace Officer’s certificate or enforcement experience.
  • National Diploma in Nature Conservation.

Note: This position is based at Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, and the successful candidate will be required to live on-site.
