The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has the following vacancies:

Chief Engineer: Civil (Grade A) – Ref No: 2024/38 (X2 Posts)

Salary: R1 146 540 per annum (all-inclusive salary package)
Centre: Head Office (Pretoria)

Requirements:

  • BSc or BEng in Civil Engineering or relevant qualification (Postgraduate qualification advantageous)
  • Compulsory registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng.) with the Engineering Council of South Africa
  • Six years post-qualification experience as a registered professional Engineer
  • Extensive experience in various fields of civil engineering including geotechnical investigations, water engineering, and construction materials
  • Experience in traffic and transportation engineering preferred
  • Good understanding of CIDB standards and standard professional services contracts
  • Excellent communication and technical report writing skills
  • Valid driver’s license (minimum code B) and willingness to travel
  • Experience in managing and leading junior engineers, technicians, and technologists

Duties:

  • Technical specification and evaluation of professional service providers’ and contractors’ bids
  • Review and acceptance of professional service provider’s concept and detailed designs
  • Assist in compilation of tender documentation
  • Conduct technical inspections and integrity surveys on civil engineering assets
  • Compilation of technical justifications and business cases for new projects
  • Quality control over work of consultants and contractors during project execution
  • Resolve technical disputes during project stages
  • Review and audit final professional civil engineering accounts
  • Development, implementation, and review of standardized civil engineering practice manuals
  • Undertake detail design, documentation, and implementation of minor projects
  • Mentorship and supervision of candidate engineers, technologists, and technicians

  • Identify and optimize technical solutions, perform administrative and related functions
  • Compile and submit reports, provide inputs to the operational plan
  • Develop, implement, and maintain databases, research and development
  • Liaise with relevant boards/councils on engineering-related matters
